Weekend Project – Doorways

Photos by Dan with guest commentary Sherri.

Had a rare weekend off and enjoyed a trip to Pittsburgh with my dear husband and favorite photographer – who are one in the same.  We decided on an essay of doors.  What amazing variety, color and style we discovered in a relatively small area of the city.

I found this picture to be a little confusing at first glance even though I had seen the subject first hand.  It’s actually a framed antique poster used as advertisement for a framing shop.  I love the way the shadows of the steel safety door create different lines on the poster.

The iron work on this door is a beautiful contrast to the rich color of the wood.  I was told the color of this church had been black until it was recently cleaned.  I like that this particular door frame retains some of the black.  It makes the stonework that much more interesting.

Perhaps my favorite picture of the day.  It’s almost like the walls, steps and stonework above the entryway were photographed in another time period and the door itself is smack dab in the here and now.

I am a country girl to the core but one of the things I love about Pittsburgh is the potential for a visual surprise around every corner.

So this photo doesn’t exactly fit into the “doorway” theme of the day but I think it’s a great representation of the how the old and the new exist side by side in this city.  I like the fact that it’s possible to move forward while maintaining an appreciation for the past.  Maybe it’s a doorway of sorts after all – providing a little peek inside to how it should be done.
